An IVLA Student Aims for Excellence. Meet Competitive Archer Lucas Morgan!

In addition to being a middle school student with International Virtual Learning Academy, Lucas Morgan trains and competes in archery. Here is what Lucas has to say:

“I have been doing archery for almost five years now. I got my first bow for Christmas five years ago. Out of those five years, I have been doing competitive archery for just over two years.

Before I got into archery, I used to shoot a lot of rifles. However, when bullets became more expensive, we saw archery on TV and thought it would be a fun sport to get into. Now I shoot between 400 and 500 arrows a week.

I have traveled to many places all over the Pacific United States. Some of those include Eureka, Nevada, Sacramento, California, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Eugene, Oregon. I have even traveled to Atlanta, Georgia.  I am hoping to be able to attend more out of state tournaments this year.

One of my favorite memories of archery was when I shot a perfect score on the 3-D course in Eureka, Nevada. A 3-D course is when you are out hiking in the woods and you shoot at foam animals, such as deer, bears, and smaller animals such as rabbits and squirrels.  These targets are placed at varying distances and in challenging locations, such as hidden behind trees and bushes, or along steep slopes.

Archery is a very mental sport.  If you are “in your head” getting angry and frustrated with your shooting, it doesn’t matter how good you are or how much you have prepared, it is not going to be a good tournament for you.  At one point in archery, I was not competing as well as I wanted to and I was struggling with my confidence. I just wanted to give up.  But I kept pushing through, and here I am one year later with two Nevada State Championships, and a certificate that says I am ranked number one in the United States for my class.

My main goal in archery is to become one of the Hornets. The Hornets are a group of archers from all over the world. Some of them include the absolute best archers in the world.

One of the main reasons that I switched to IVLA was, so I could continue to do archery. I have a tournament almost every weekend and I am spending up to a week out of town for some of the major tournaments.

My favorite thing about IVLA is the freedom it gives me to be able to travel around the country to do the archery shoots.”

Thanks, Lucas, for giving us a glimpse into the life of an IVLA student who is doing what they love!
