IVLA offers flexible scheduling for student athletes

Meet Emerson Ryan!

International Virtual Learning Academy (IVLA) is proud to count many wonderful athletes among our student body. Student-athletes choose IVLA for its flexibility and robust academics, allowing them to excel in school while pursuing their sport.

Emerson Ryan is one such student-athlete. In collaboration with Picabo Street Academy, Emerson attends online high school while perfecting her sport. We were able to ask Emerson a few questions –

What is your sport?

I do alpine racing.

How old were you when you got into your sport? What drew you to the sport?

I was about 9 I think. I always watched it with my parents on TV. I’ve always loved skiing and thought it was so cool that people got to train to go fast around gates.

What do you love about your sport?

It gives me the chance to be with my friends 6 days a week. They are more like family now that we see each other pretty much every day. I love being able to do what I love everyday which is to ski. My sport also helps me make friendships with people from different states and even different countries. It also teaches me important life skills like how to take care of myself, how to make relationships with other people, and how to talk to adults.

Of which accomplishments/awards are you most proud?

I am most proud of making it to regionals this year which was in Alaska. I am also proud that I am on the highest team for my age (red group). I have a bunch of medals in my room from over the years, but I am not as proud of the medals as I am proud of how hard I worked to get them.

How does online learning fit into your life/sport?

Online learning couldn’t be more perfect for me. I have time to train and travel for my races, as well as get a good education. I am so fortunate to be able to do the things that are important to me – skiing and school.

What do you like best about studying with IVLA?

I love that I am on my own (sort of). It gives me a sense of accountability and responsibility. It showed me a couple sides of myself that I never thought were there. I found out that I can be productive if I want to be and that I am more responsible.

Thank you, Emerson, for taking a few minutes to answer some questions. We wish you all the best on the slopes and with your schoolwork.
